WHAT IS THE GARDEN OF EATIN'?
Begun as an Eagle Scout project by Marshall Levit and many other people in April 1992, the Garden of Eatin' is a unique opportunity to do something tangible about the problem of hunger existing in Houston today. Located on the grounds of Congregation Beth Yeshurun, this community garden has five beds, each 5 feet wide and 40 feet long.
IS THE GARDEN OF EATIN' REALLY NECESSARY?
The answer is yes. It is estimated that 21% of all Houston residents live in poverty. Of that number, many are senior adults and children (perhaps as many as one in three). Whatever the causes of poverty, the problem of hunger is real and many Houstonians are faced with it every day. By providing fresh fruits and vegetables to the local food pantries we can do a small part to improve the dietary choices made for those less fortunate than we are.
DOES THE GARDEN OF EATIN' MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Yes! Even a small garden can generate thousands of servings of produce in a year. Working together as a community, we can help fight the never ending battle of hunger in Houston. By helping others we are helping ourselves. It is important that everyone contribute some part in this battle against hunger.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Since this is an ongoing project, there are many things you can do. If you have gardening skills, we always need help planting, mulching, weeding, mowing, and harvesting. After harvesting we need volunteers to make deliveries to the food pantries. Even if you're not an experienced gardener we would appreciate your help. If you have the will to learn, we have the will to teach. Gardening is an inexpensive, pleasant way to spend time with your family or getting your daily exercise. Whether you donate time once a week, once a month or once a year, your efforts are needed, welcomed, and essential to the progress of the Garden of Eatin'.
IF WORKING IN THE GARDEN ISN'T FOR ME, WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
There are two other ways you can help if gardening isn't for you. 1. If you own or work for a company or have access to general gardening supplies such as tools, mulch, seeds, pest control, or fertilizer (only to mention a few of the various supplies needed to sustain this project) you can donate them for a worthy cause as well as a tax write off. 2. You could be one of our financial donors and your name would be recognized at all garden events and on this web page. Any amount would greatly help contribute to the future of this endeavor. Even a few dollars is enough to buy a package of seeds or a foot of mulch.
SOUNDS GOOD. WHAT NEXT?
No matter which way you help, your efforts are greatly appreciated. Whether it be physical donations, financial donations or adding your name to the list of volunteers; volunteers who gladly give their time, helping others who truly need it.
